Winter Car Care Tips

Winter Car Care Tips- From American Auto Masters, Car Repair, Auto Maintenence, Irving Texas

It’s COLD outside. And, although we don’t have a whole lot of “winter” in Texas, we do have a few cold days, and it’s important to keep your car in its best working order. The following tips will help keep your car in great shape all winter long.

Winter causes your battery to work harder. Therefore, if your battery is already weak during the summer months, you may wake up to a dead battery in the winter. If you haven’t had your battery tested in a few months, now would be a great time. If your battery is not in good working order, you’ll want to purchase a new one as soon as possible.

Check those levels! Your anti-freeze (also called Coolant) should be checked each time you have your oil changed. But, if you don’t know if it was included in your last oil change, or if you changed your oil yourself and forgot to check, now is the time. Anti-freeze keeps the engine from freezing when the weather is cold.

Gasoline and Washer Fluid

These are two more items that should be kept full during the winter months. You don’t want accumulated water freezing in your tank. And also, you don’t know how long you’ll need to let the car run before it warms up in the morning, and you don’t want to be heating your car and run out of gas. The same goes for the washer fluid; you don’t want to run out while you’re on a dirty road and be unable to see out the windshield.

If you’re in a place with severe winter weather, winter tires and/or chains are required. But, here in North Texas, that generally isn’t necessary. Do make sure your tires have the appropriate amount of tread, replace them when suggested. And do check the air pressure in your tires so they are working under optimal conditions.

Defroster and Heat

These things are obvious but easy to overlook when it’s so warm outside. Make sure the defroster works well and can clear your windshield before going out and getting caught in the weather.

Survival Kit

You should have a basic survival kit in your car regardless of weather or circumstances. A basic kit will include a blanket, first aid kit, a knife, flashlight, jumper cables, and cell phone batteries. Also, keep that windshield scraper handy—just in case!
